About Us

The Muslim Cultural & Welfare Association of Sutton (MCWAS) was established in 1981 by the late Lal Hussain MBE, former Mayor of the London Borough of Sutton, to serve the needs of the local Muslim community.

Over the past four decades, we have grown and developed alongside the community, expanding both our activities and the facilities available to local residents. From our early beginnings, when Jumu’ah prayers were held at the British Polio Fellowship Hall and Tarawih prayers at Robin Hood Lane, we eventually moved to our current home at Wentworth Hall in 1996. The centre was refurbished in 2013 into a multi-purpose community facility, with a prayer hall providing a space for worship and contemplation, alongside an upstairs hall that supports learning, social activities and community events.

Today, we serve residents across Sutton and the surrounding areas, supporting wellbeing and creating opportunities for people to come together, connect and contribute to their community.

We provide a wide range of religious, educational, social, cultural and community activities for people of all ages. These include family and community events, educational programmes, youth activities, support for older people, volunteering opportunities, charitable initiatives, and activities that promote health, wellbeing and social connection.

We place strong emphasis on supporting those in need, bringing people together and strengthening relationshipswithin the wider community. Our work is delivered through staff, trustees and a strong network of volunteers who contribute their time, skills and experience to support local initiatives.

We are committed to being a positive contributor to the wider Sutton community and to working collaboratively with local organisations, residents and partners. Through our activities and partnerships, we seek to promote stronger communities, greater social connection, wellbeing and positive participation, while reflecting Islamic values of compassion, stewardship, service and care for others.

    MCWAS has a rich history and has become one of the leading and most active Islamic institutions in the London Borough of Sutton and surrounding areas. We aim to:

    Educate the whole community about Islamic teachings through Quranic scripture and Prophetic tradition.
